Death And Work
Recently, my pastor's daughter had moved on to be with the Lord, even though I don't really know her, I can't even begin to imagine the pain of losing someone close to your heart so suddenly. Suddenly, you feel that nothing really matters, your prized possessions, your job, your ambitions and pursuits...what matters then? what matters then?...these thoughts coursed through my mind even as I am racing to complete each day's worth of work..
Before the news struck me, I was concerned and working furiously away with my lesson plans. slides, all the usual stuff of trying to put in my best so can do well for practicum blah blah...reality really struck home this time when tragedy occurs so close.
Often I came across verses in the bible and gloss over them, but at times, verses just speak so much into the situation that I am in.
'Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun' Eccl 2:11
'Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.' Heb 2:14-15
Honestly, death is not something I fear or dread after becoming a Christian, but the temporal loss of a loved one while we await eternal salvation is still heart-wrenching.
We live in a real world, not a deceptive fairy tale spun by protective and prosperous environment, at times we need to constant remind ourselves as Christians, we are aliens and strangers on this earth.
'All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.....they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.' Hebrews 11:13-16
